Course Description:
7th grade Math is focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
Grading Procedure:
During the course of this year, students will be assessed in many ways - participation, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects.
The grades will be figured using the grade categories and weights shown below. This is used across the district for all middle school math courses and is aligned with District 65.
50% - Assessments: tests, quizzes, and major projects
50% - Participation/Performance: Work done both in class and at home
Homework:
Math is not a spectator sport. Mathematicians are much like athletes in that you must practice in order to improve. You cannot master math by watching others do it. You must participate in class and practice each new concept many times to become proficient. Therefore, practice will be assigned daily. Students are expected to complete classroom requirements on time and with quality of thought. Answers should ALWAYS include a written explanation of the solution and/or the mathematical steps needed to solve the problem.
Homework assignments will be reviewed in class and opportunities to ask questions will be provided. Students are responsible for correcting and revising their own assignments. Original work should not be erased. Corrections should be done on a separate sheet of paper so students can learn from their mistakes. Assignments will be graded based effort rather than for accuracy. Points will be deducted if an assignment is partially complete, does not include work, has an incomplete heading, etc. Any late work must be turned in by the end of the unit, or it will not be accepted. An assignment is considered late if it is not submitted DURING the period it is due. Students will not be permitted to return to their lockers during class to retrieve forgotten assignments or supplies. Therefore, students must remain organized. Having a binder solely for math should alleviate this issue for students.
If there is a problem with homework, students should first consult their notes, book, and online resources to make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it before coming to me for help. I am available before school or after school if students are still struggling with a concept.
Absent Work:
If a student is absent, he/she is given one day for everyday that they are absent to complete any missed work. It is the student's responsible to come to me to get the missing assignments and due dates.
Quizzes:
Quizzes will be given periodically throughout an investigation. If a student is dissatisfied with a quiz grade, he/she may improve it by completing revisions with me during study hall. Revisions may be completed for any question that did not earn full credit. Up to half of the points lost can be earned back for any revised question that is answered correctly and includes supporting work and/or a written explanation. Revisions must be signed by a parent or guardian by the assigned due date. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
